Lack of “Ethnic Pride” Stunting the Development of African American Youths
Over the years, there have been many books, speeches, and research studies that offer solutions to the problems confronting African Americans and the communities they live in. Many of these solutions do have potential and may be of great value; however, they are missing the most crucial element to success; that element is unity.
Unity represents oneness of mind, heart and soul. Unity is cultivated amongst human beings through some sort of common denominator. Without one or more common denominators, unity is practically impossible. Religion, culture, moral values, and traditions are all perfect examples of a common trait or element that will cultivate unity.
The lack of unity among African Americans is the major reason for the many ills that afflict our people and our communities. The disheartening truth is that many African Americans do not see themselves as one race of people. According to a survey by the Pew Research Center in 2007 titled “Optimism about Black Progress Declines – Blacks See Growing Values Gap Between Poor and Middle Class”, African Americans (non-Hispanic Blacks) were asked:
Can blacks still be thought of as a single race? Only fifty-three percent of African Americans believe that we are still a single race. The overriding factor in determining their answer was the differences in the values held by middle class and lower income blacks. These results indicate the absence of a common denominator among African Americans.
The question to ask now is: Why are African Americans not as unified as other ethnic groups in America? In my opinion, the answer is; we (African Americans) are the only ethnic group in America that does not have linkage with its ancestors; thus, there is no linkage to the indigenous culture of our ancestral lands.
The indigenous culture of our ancestral lands is part of our nature. In essence, we are not living according to our nature; therefore, we are dysfunctional as a people. Living the “American way of life” without any true understanding of our own ancestral culture has been a major reason for our not having reached our true potential here in America.
In my book, “The Black-Print”, I present some interesting concepts that I believe will bring about the unity that is sorely needed among African Americans. My understanding of America leads me to profess that only through a unified African American community will we be able to make significant political and economic progress here in America and around the world. My motto is “African Americans will never be respected as individuals until African Americans are respected as a people.”
One of the ideas in my book calls for a conference among the major African American non-profit organizations in America. The purpose of this conference would be to discuss and debate the merits of merging or consolidation the major African American non-profit organizations.
My view is that by consolidating the resources of these major non-profit organizations; this new entity would formulate and implement a nationwide strategy to deal with the obstacles that impede the political and economic progress of African Americans.
I was asked, on numerous occasions, “Do you really believe it would be feasible or even possible to merge or consolidate African American non-profit organizations?” My response: “I most certainly do; and the reason for my optimism is the fact that there is currently an entity that functions in a capacity similar to what I have suggested in my book.
The organization that I am speaking about is the United Jewish Communities/Jewish Federations of North America. This organization represents 157 Jewish Federations and 400 independent network communities throughout America. Their mission is to protect and enhance the well-being of Jews worldwide.
There is no coincidence that the Jewish people are one of the most united and prosperous ethnic groups in America. There common denominators are the Jewish Holocaust and their religion. Jewish people throughout the world have made a commitment to one another to never allow another Holocaust.
The influence of the UJC/Jewish Federations of America was clearly demonstrated by their recent invitation to come to the White House and speak with President Obama to discuss the issues concerning their communities. African Americans also have a common denominator; though many of us seem to want to forget what it is.
Our common denominator is the fact that practically all of us are descendants of African slaves. We need to make a commitment to one another to unite and create a formidable entity that will work towards achieving real economic and political influence for the descendants of African slaves, today’s Black America. If this works for others, why wouldn’t it work for us?”
I address many other issues concerning the African American community and provide some very interesting concepts and specific strategies to remedy the most serious and destructive forces that perpetuate the marginalization of African Americans and the communities they live.

I know that in all professional and Olympic sports they make 19% of athletes including every sport that there is at least one African-American athlete according to TIDES.com.
