"the Cask of Amontillado" Part 1
The Cask of Amontillado" is one of Edgar Allan Poe’s short but totally thrilling stories. This story has been astonishing readers since November 1846 when it was first published. This story is a powerful tale about revenge. The entire idea is revolved around a murder of Montresor’s friend being buried alive! However dreadful and devastating it may sound, the actual murderer was Montresor. Nevertheless the story still attracts millions of readers’ attention and appeals to many levels of human’s soul.
The narrator tells a story after fifty years have passed. This fact outlines him being bothered by the past events throughout this time. What is it, a simple desire to share the deeds he had made, or the need in confession? The description of terrifying murder reveals the remorseless and disgusting part of his nature. The only fact that can possibly justify Montresor’s actions is taking revenge, by the way, for some uncertain insult. The revenge for the sake of family motto and principles holds a deep inferiority complex. Montresor, feeling no pangs of conscience, in the twilight of his life, still does not admit the guilt. He considers it to be “For the love of God” and places the last stone in the wall, taking away any possible opportunity for Fortunato to survive.
What patience should have Montresor possessed to remain firm, knowing what had to happen in catacombs. The important and the most paradoxical thing to mention is that Montresor was highly persuaded in his honorable intentions. This is when dramatic irony occurs – when the reader becomes painfully aware of what is about to happen.
