What Do You Know About Of Finding Out African American History
Mine is the first generation of African People who have no idea their history. Don't get me wrong. We still recognize the big names. We know Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Jesse Jackson and the rest. However the sense of struggle - the sense of the importance of learning African American historical past and studying from the past tips on how to make a better future - is missing from lots of my fellow afro Americans.
I used to be just like them until I visited the museum of African American history Detroit. That beautiful place modified the way in which I see everything. Since I went to visit it, I've been asking my dad and mom all kinds of questions about black history. I knew abstractly that they were concerned in the civil rights battle, but I didn't really ever think about it very much. I had all the time thought of my mother and father as sq., you see, and it is arduous to reconcile this imaginative and prescient with the idea of them as younger radicals combating for equality.
I have always considered myself as a rebel, but after learning a little bit little bit of the history of African Americans, I understand it's my mother and father which can be the rebels. They were willing to risk all the things - their safety, their freedom, even their life - to make issues higher for me and my generation. Learning African American historical past has taught me that I must be grateful to them for the sacrifices that they made. More importantly, it has taught me that it's essential that I take advantage of myself. Being aware of African American historical past means that I know how exhausting it was to get to the place we're today. I need to not squander the probabilities that I have been given.
After all, African American history isn't just a matter of the past. The historical past of blacks in America continues today. Issues like ending racial profiling and combating for affirmative action are every bit as vital as desegregation was a era ago. Nowadays now we have advantages that the last era didn't have. Not only do we have equal rights for the most half, however now we have whole libraries filled with African American historical past that we are able to consult. What is a good book that helps explain our American history easily and in a way teens can understand?
I want to find a book that is an easy way to learn about American history. I want to be able to learn about the important events that happened in our history.
The best book ever written on US history is "People's History of the United States" by Howard Zinn. I read it back in high school, and it made me want to be a historian.
What's great about it it that it's a bottom-up history of the US, told from the point of view of ordinary people: the native Americans, workers, immigrants, rather than all Presidents all the time.
