Ceiling feeling: Consider the age of the house and intrinsic architectural features. A statement chandelier works with high ceilings where the room proportions can take a bold piece. But with a low ceiling, a pendant feature light makes the room appear more cramped. Play safe and mix recessed spotlights, table lamps and wall lights which work well regardless of ceiling height.
To hang or not to hang: The current fashion for pendant lights hung in clusters shows no sign of abating. Tom Dixon’s Beat lights from Leigh Harmer, look fabulous hung together at slightly different heights over a dining table. Add colour with Verner Panton’s ‘Flowerpot’ lights. The ideal height for lights over a dining table is 90cm above the surface.
Dimming down: Don't over-estimate the importance of dimmer switches which create the right mood for differing occasions. Bedroom lighting needs to change brightness so you can do your make-up, read a book in bed or turn the lights down low for a more romantic feel. For maximum impact with minimum effort, snap up a dimmer switch remote control from John Lewis.
Highlight by spotlight: Got a special painting or decorative mirror? Position directional lights to lead the eye to a focal point. Discreet spotlights alone can be a harsh way of lighting a space, but work well if directed on to a statement piece. Think ahead: What is each room for? The living room may be used for entertaining, reading, watching television or just simply relaxing. Don’t go black: The darker your paint, the more light it absorbs. But do use darker paint colours in a small study or den to create a cosy, warm feel. Hello! I’m looking for a recipe from the Cooking Light, April 1996 issue. It is a recipe for an asparagus and tomato salad. The one I’m looking for also had asparagus. Somewhere along the way, I lost that issue and, because I hadn’t made it for so many years, haven’t quite been able to replicate the salad 100%. Can you tell me if this recipe is include din the 1996 Annual Recipe edition you show above? I’ve searched sooooo long for tis recipe. Thank you!
