Words Of Motivation: What Is The Fear Of Poverty?
n 1937 Napoleon Hill wrote his classic book 'Think And Grow Rich.' In this book he listed the main fears he believed were suffered by man. Top of the list was the fear of poverty. As he wrote, "The fear of poverty is, without doubt, the most destructive of the six basic fears."
I can see what he means. The fear of poverty comes from the severe anxiety about making mistakes and so losing our ability to survive financially. Since Hill wrote his book society has become more and more indoctrinated with the idea that measures success in terms of money so, for this reason, I am combining the fear of poverty and the fear of failure.
Interestingly both fears have their foundation in the erroneous assumption that failure is wrong and for someone to win another person must lose. Generally this is not true.
The reality is, as Napoleon Hill stated, We live in a world of overabundance of everything the heart could desire, with nothing standing between us and our desires, excepting a lack of a definite purpose."
So what sort of impact do these two fears have on our lives?
The Signs
Failure of any kind is seen as bad in the corporate workplace and to be avoided whatever the situation. The sad fact is however that many successes come from overcoming a period of mistakes. Trial and error can be a great way of finding what works. Unfortunately the avoidance of failure mentality means that entire corporations fall victim to the twin fears of poverty and failure.
People go to great lengths to avoid the prospect of failure and will refuse to take on responsibility as a result. Often they will appear lazy and indifferent. They are delighted if some other mug is happy to be responsible for a project as the sufferers of the fears are always keen to blame somebody else for mistakes. Ironically any success by that decision maker will be met by jealousy on the part of those less willing to take charge.
Perhaps inevitably procrastination is a major feature of the fears of failure and poverty. Time is taken to find excuses as to why certain goals have not been achieved; this too is ironic as often the time taken to find a good excuse could have been better employed completing the project.
Change is treated with suspicion and the two main engines of industry, innovation and risk, are the losers. Many will see the status quo as the preferred state: anything else would be too dangerous.
Problems tend to remain unresolved, as those fearing failure would be unwilling to tackle issues head on. Disputes would result in unfavourable compromises to avoid any decision-making and to reduce difficulties in the short term. Often a workforce will demonstrate a fear of poverty by accepting small pay rises; the fear is characterized by such bargaining for small rewards.
Recently I have noticed another common symptom of the fear of poverty: the blind acceptance of anything that is free. This can also include buying items which are on sale or reduced, no matter that the item is not really needed.
A little while ago I was told about some free bottles of wine that were available. I am teetotal so I said I would not be bothering. The person who had passed on the news was astonished; he could not believe I would turn down anything that was free.
The sad truth is the symptoms of these fears can be very destructive if not stopped. The desire for free items can all too often turn into stealing. The fear of not demonstrating failure occasionally leads to fraud with figures altered and errors erased.
The fears of poverty and failure can easily lead to negative thinking, pessimism and a bad self-image. Eventually this can manifest itself as stress, a lack of care of physical appearance and even such illnesses as high blood pressureand indigestion.
Conclusion
The fears of poverty and failure can have serious results, both to individuals and society as a whole. In truth, not worrying about failure and confronting challenges produces confidence. The reality is of course that any activity is likely to involve facing failure and, if you are not making mistakes, you are not making anything.
We need to learn lessons from those who are not afraid of failure and take confidence from their words of motivation. The belief that failure is wrong and should be avoided needs to be challenged.
"The greatest mistake you can make in life is to continually be afraid you will make one." Elbert Hubbard

Why do people always insult 9/11 conspiracy theorists?
I guess it just goes to show how right Elbert Hubbard was...
"If you can't answer a man's arguments, all is not lost; you can still call him vile names."
"Because they can't respond to the questions they attack the questioner." Hooold up now what planet are you on? WE are the ones asking the questions remember, have our questions been answered? Not even just us, the victim's families have demanded answers for very suspicious questions, why have they not gotten answers?
Wooah my sorry chief, thought you were on the otherside, sorry my mind was on a different planet.
"They made fun or the simple minded in school, they teased the slow people in their classes.
It's just more of the same."
As far as I knew, it was always the more intellectually superior who were picked on in school, the "geeks" and "nerds" who didn't correspond to anti-establishment norms, the kids who thought outside the box, and had a promising future secured ahead. Say wah... ?
It's hard to admit it when you've been lied to for so long. So they develop the "tinhat" culture because let's face it, they have nothing better to say about us.
