Things To Know Before Visiting Devil's Millhopper Geological State Park
Devil's Millhopper Geological State Park is one of the beautiful parks of Florida, United States. The park covers an area of only 71 acres and interestingly, there are three very different ecological regions in the park, and this is the main reason for public interest and curiosity. The ecological regions are created naturally by means of exposure to sun, fire and water.
The Millhopper is basically a giant sink hole, a depression in the ground; however, this is a special sinkhole with an awkward and funny name. The "Devil's" in the name comes from the time when farmers exploring the sinkhole found a lot of bones of all sorts of mammals in it and thought that probably these fossils have been left here to please the wretched devil. Additionally, the name Millhopper comes from the fact that back in the 19th century, farmers would grind grain in a gristmill which had a funnel shaped opening at the top called hopper The giant sinkhole in the park is also funnel shaped and that's why the name is given.
The sink hole is 120 feet deep and 500 feet in diameter, which makes it a really huge sink hole, which is what is special about the park along with its name.
Travelers to this part are warned seriously: There are two hundred and thirty six steps that take you to the very bottom of the sinkhole, remember however, this also means that you will need to climb exactly two hundred and thirty six steps to go back. When you go down the steps of the hole, you will notice a cool breeze which will feel very pleasant and enjoying.
The Devil's Millhopper Geological State Park is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday and charges an entrance fee.
