Drop Shadow-from Illusion to Illumination
This content throws some light about this technique. Drop shadow can actually create a visual metaphor in an image. Photographers, advertising agencies and even professionals who deal in photo imaging can benefit from it. It requires an expert and steady hand with lots of patience. After all Rome wasn't built in just one day! A good drop shadow too takes a while to reveal its charming insight. Just like a painter works on the gradient, tonal quality and light & dark shadows of the painting so does the graphic artist. Although these are the most common elements found in the Photoshop menu their usage is tricky. The wrong angle, gradient and shadow play can make the illumination look like a bad illusion. It will appear like a beginner with a large L sign on the car on a busy road! It is very easy to spot the right and the wrong drop shadow. They are applied in different styles.
An enviable glow can be achieved with a drop shadow. The designer should be able to make colors flow from 2-d format to make the image look real. Have you seen some logos that give an all round real look? Drop shadow is applied to give this effect. Designers with Mac and Windows operating systems can easily attune their systems to use it. Mac already has fine examples of drop shadow in its menu, if you are still struggling to figure it out. It is like bringing the digital and non-digital world on the same platform. The light sources, edges, dark elements are adjusted with the logos or images. Advanced designers are able to interpret the spatial degree of light and darkness and create the bluff of the shadow. It's an art that develops with time for even the most talented professional.
A drop shadow is a great way to create the illusion of space. It gives a 3-d effect in the spatial region. In our everyday world such shadows are created from behind (where the source of light is). When it is done on an image it brings out or makes the image pop out of the space. Sometimes it gives a feeling that the object is floating. This also results in the appearance of the gradients. They appear near the light source. And this way the closer part is lighter and the farthest one is darker. This occurs when there is one source of light. What happens when the light comes from multiple sources? It creates several complex gradients. The designer then has to use his imaginative skills and prepare the right combination of drop shadow and gradient. Once he has achieved the structural code he can then create the metaphorical visual of the image. The more subtle the effect, the better will the visual be.
The relationship between the drop shadow and the gradient is unique. When an image does not require it a designer should not fall prey to it. It will only harm the original effect. What can be done with a clipping path, photoshop masking or photoshop retouching should not be played around with other tools in the menu-drop shadow being one.
